Limited editions explained
My preference has always been to present work in sizes that reflect a life like experience of being there. I have also found that size is often not a barrier to wall space. Our 1000 square foot home has three Large format fine art prints. One in each bedroom and one in our lounge. These make a true statement on our walls and look magnificent. But if size is an issue, please feel free to contact me with your desired size. As with all activities, there is a cost involved! One might see the material costs at the end but it there are the hidden and unavoidable costs too. Travel, accommodation and time. We all have to pay those, be it yourself or myself in the quest for a specific location for our photo.
Next is the gear. In my time as a professional photographer I regularly hear people insist that their smartphone or consumer camera is sufficient. I print a lot of work from a variety of other cameras and the differences in image quality are startling! The fact is, gear is crucial. Drum scans of large format film will give the best results. But I specifically wanted a digital work flow and chose the H6D-100c which is the premium camera from Hasselblad. It utilizes a 100MP 645 digital sensor with 4.7micron photo sites. All of this important in actual image quality and the camera system comes from a time when Hasselblad and Phase One were actively pursuing optical excellence. Since 2018 there has been a dramatic shift to technology laden cameras that have sacrificed image quality. The very feature I consider key to the art of photography.
The H6D-100c came at a price and that is reflected in the limited editions that I sell. It would not be uncommon to see me on a mountain top with $70,000 worth of camera and lenses.
Lastly is the creative element. Each photographer has a level of expertise that has developed over time. Our styles are all unique, some wait for perfect conditions, others edit the photo to create an expression more akin to what the photo inspired in them. I am drawn to a faithful reproduction of a real moment in time. Each moment that passes is truly unique and will never occur again. We live on a constantly evolving planet with constantly changing conditions. I use the tools available in my camera, field of view, focus, depth of field, shutter speed, sensitivity (ISO or ND) and position to capture these moments. My skill is my understanding of the balance between reality and these tools.
If you would like to know more about the process of imagining an image, to achieving it in camera, and fine tuning it in phocus before printing, mounting and framing. Then come and join me on one of my 645 experience packages. These packages are designed to put you in control of the shot. You choose the topic and destination. I provide you with a memory card and the full use of my camera where you can reconnect with the perfect balance of the nostalgia of traditional photography and the convenience of a digital workflow. The cameras are big and heavy, the autofocus is slow and there is no image stabilization. You have to consider each step to achieve a perfect shot, and your photos will have precision and detail that compliments the intricacy of our world. When we return to base we will go over the photos and edit using the digital equivalent of tools that you would find in any darkroom. Then we’ll print, mount and frame your photo. You have your hands in the process from beginning to end so that when your masterpiece is hanging in your home of office you can truly say. I did that, every step of the way.
